How to Calculate Steel Weight Online?
When building a house, calculating the exact quantity of TMT bar is critical because reinforcement steel takes up a massive portion of the overall construction cost. By using our free online steel calculator, you can determine the exact weight in kg and tons required for your column, lintel, and roof slab.
Instead of relying on guesswork, civil engineers apply standard physical rules to extract the exact quantity. Our tool automates this process. Just select your bar dia in mm like 8, 10, 12, or 16, input the length of one piece in feet, and enter how many pieces you are tying. The calculator will output the total weight and price instantly.
Understanding the Steel Calculation Formula
The universal formula used across India for calculating steel weight per meter is D² / 162.28, where D stands for the diameter of the iron rod in mm. For example, if you have a 12mm rod, the calculation is 12 multiplied by 12 divided by 162.28, which gives you approximately 0.89 kg per meter.
If your structural drawing uses feet instead of meters, you must use the alternative rule which is D² / 533 to find the weight per foot.
Thumb Rule for Steel Quantity in RCC
During initial house building estimates, civil experts use a thumb rule. For a standard residential concrete structure, you need about 3 to 4 kg of steel per square foot of built up area. For a heavy retaining wall or plinth beam, the reinforcement percentage goes significantly higher compared to a simple one way slab.
Frequently Asked Questions

It is very simple. Choose the dia of the rod like 8mm or 10mm. Enter the length of one single piece in feet and total quantity of rods. Finally, type the current market rate per kg in India. Our system applies the standard calculation rule and provides total weight and total price.
For a standard concrete RCC slab, we calculate the main reinforcement and distribution bars separately. First find the total length of all bars required using spacing details, then multiply that total running length in meter by the standard rule D² / 162.28 to get the exact kg.
To find the weight of a 12mm rod per meter, square the dia which is 12 x 12 = 144. Divide 144 by 162.28. The result is roughly 0.887 kg per meter. If the standard full rod length is 12 meter, one full piece will weight approximately 10.6 kg.
A typical structural column takes about 1.5 to 2.5 percent of the total concrete volume in steel. Footing requires about 0.8 percent. For residential construction, civil engineers usually recommend using 16mm or 20mm dia bars for main column pillars to safely support the building load.
Yes. By inputting your accurate local TMT price per kg, our steel cost calculator gives you the exact material expense. Whether you are estimating a retaining wall, roof, or lintel beam, multiplying the total kg by the rate gives you a highly precise budget.
